Vishakhapatnam: In 1998, 11.72 sq kilometres of hill slopes in and around Vizag were occupied by houses and various other constructions.

Cut to 2010 – The figure has shot up more than threefold at 35 sq kilometres, and counting. Forest cover, barren land and vegetation have drastically shrunk due to illegal construction activity, highly detrimental to the upcoming ‘smart city’s’ environment.
