This year’s host nation, Japan, has spent billions for the Olympics but it is not showing the same commitment to climate action. As a top fossil fuel financier, it has a huge responsibility in phasing out coal and gas. Japan’s rhetoric and actual efforts to make the Olympics “green” cannot hide the fact that Japan is the world’s 5th largest emitter and is one of the top public and private financiers of fossil fuels. This greenwashing is not acceptable.
