The Union government launched the E-Sharm Portal on Thursday in compliance with the Supreme Court’s orders. Workers can now register on the portal using their Aadhaar and bank account details and will then be issued an e-Shram card containing a 12-digit unique number. The WPC, an all-India network of organisations working on issues related to unorganised, informal, and migrant workers, said time-bound implementation of the portal could “prove to be effective in providing informal workers with much needed social security entitlements.
The charter said that it is important to acknowledge the “heavy price” paid by the workers for this process to begin, referring to the deaths of migrant workers after the implementation of the nationwide COVID-19 lockdown in March last year.
