In the past few months I have been having a very big carbon footprint as Environics is taking more responsibilities for the Asian and Global Networks of which we have members. The issue of Climate is the most critical in these engagements as this issue cuts across the globe.
As a member of the Asian Peoples Network on Debt and Development, we have participated in the UNFCCC inter-sessional meetings in Bonn in the first and second week of May, on the sidelines of which we have met with members of these alliances face-to-face and had conducted workshops and strategy sessions. We were very aware of the potential withdrawal of the largest polluter while discussing various aspects and how it has become more necessary to forge global alliance and share knowledge and skills. We as a part of APMDD have been requested to follow the discussions and also become a member of Climate, Land, Ambition and Rights Alliance (CLARA). The other important group is the Demand Climate Justice Alliance which is one of the more vociferous groups. We had our meetings on the DCJ platform and also learnt how the slack application can be used effectively for our work. Demand Climate Justice brings out a monthly bulletin The World at 1 Degree, showing the impacts that are already being felt!
These and the other meetings have also been were couple of us in the International Coal Network and have been using various platforms to end coal based development and move to renewables as science no longer permits us to emit in the scales that coal based thermal power does.
This month on the eve of the Environment Day on the invitation of the Nagrik Samyukt Sangarsh Samithi of Chhattisgarh I delivered a public lecture on indigenous people and climate change. As founder members of INECC, among the oldest climate networks in India we took some important decisions at the annual meeting to further the people’s voices in policy choices.
This issue therefore is very timely and pertinent to our long term work.

Climate change has been a natural phenomenon in the geological history as corroborated by paleontological, limnological and stratigraphical evidence, once in every few million years, (the impacts of climate change too were spread over few million years) which provided ample time for flora and fauna to acclimatize with the then-changing natural environs.

We are running out of resources. And most important, we are running out of time. Our needs turned into greeds due to the ever increasing demands and we have exhausted almost every possible resource known to us. There is a dilemma about the availability of energy in near future- the energy to run our houses, our vehicles, our industries and our cities.

The impacts of global warming and climate change are worldwide. The World Health Organisation estimates that the warming and precipitation trends due to anthropogenic climate change of the past 30 years already claim over 150,000 lives annually.
